You know that streak of reality that hits when you’re making good progress that kills your momentum?

That’s the one.

It all started with a call from College Student Daughter who had to come home for a few days because of strep throat. She’d been to the clinic, and she had her antibiotic so… College Student Daughter drove home and collapsed on the couch for a couple of days.

The evening College Student Daughter leaves home, I get a sore throat. On top of my asthma. Then, High School Daughter gets a sore throat, but her test shows negative. Three doctor visits  and three days (yes, three) later, both High School Daughter and I are on antibiotics. Her diagnosis required two separate tests. Another day passes and Only Son has to miss school due to…strep throat. Another doctor visit and more antibiotics.

All of the local Walgreen pharmacists greet me by name these days.

NaNoWriMo is No Mo. I’m not lamenting too much because I’ve gained a great start on Book Two. The chapters I’ve written should stand the test of time and still be recognizable after revisions. The kick in the behind to start writing already(!!) was just what–wait for it–just what the doctor ordered. hehe

If you are still in the NaNoWriMo race, best wishes! I’ll see you on the other side.

How do you “cheat” at NaNoWriMo?Yesterday evening, I was tired and sick and sick and tired, and I was certain that adding more to the story would be disastrous. But I was 800 words away from my goal for the day!

What to do? What to do? Copy names from the phone book? Entries from the encyclopedia? You know–sort of a filibuster. But I had a brain wave and decided to journal in the voice of my MC about what she “thought” of the plot so far.

I let her write whatever popped into her head without checking her spelling or grammar. Believe me, she thought of stuff I hadn’t. That was an easy and valuable exercise. I’ll use some of that interior dialogue in my story, and I’ll let her “journal” again soon.

If you are participating in NaNoWriMo, tell me how you’re doing?

Dr. Wicked is your friend. Yes, I must credit Dr. Wicked’s Write or Die software for getting me to my goal for the week for words written. And I discovered that it’s easy to reach 1,000 words in less than an hour if you know the words you want to write. Otherwise, not so much.

My youngest daughter was horrified by the very concept of Write or Die. Especially when I told her about the kamikaze option that will unwrite your words if you don’t keep up the pace. But I haven’t got the guts to try that option because I don’t want to wind up in tears.

If you are participating in NaNoWriMo, you have my best wishes for your success. Tell me how you’re doing.

Is there one word that you continually misspell? Mine is sergeant. If I skip a few days between uses, I have to look it up. Drives me crazy! I finally wrote it on a sticky note and stuck it to the desk beneath my keyboard.

I feel like I’m cheating on a test every time I have to peek. Maybe I’m just too much of a perfectionist, expecting total recall of all spelling facts. But spelling facts are squishy; spelling is still variable and unpredictable, no matter how we try to tame our written words using dictionaries and thesauri.

Besides, you have to choose sides if your primary language is English. Will you choose the British way or the American way? Speaking as an American who reads more than her fair share of British authors, it’s tough to make the adjustment. I prefer grey to gray. It’s prettier.

Don’t roll your eyes at me.

How is everyone out there in NaNoWriMo land? If you want to join me as one of my writing buddies, my handle is go2thebook. Go, go, go!

NaNoWriMo has begun! My average is low because of a previous engagement for the second NaNo day.

I’ve added several hundred words this evening, and I’ll probably get to 1,000 before I hit the hay. If I add a minimum of 2,000 per day through this week, I’ll be “in the black” for the 50,000 word goal.

All that to say, I’m not worried about missing a day as long as it’s the only zero day until the goal is met.
